Violin Recital

In the fall, Bernadette began her second year of violin lessons. On November 19, she participated in the fall violin recital, playing "Moto Perpetuo" by Carl Bohm.

At one point during the piece, Bernadette paused. At her next lesson, she told her teacher, "When I am playing a fast piece of music, it's kind of like reading the Lord of the Rings. I get so caught up in the music that I forget where I am."

Winter Wonderland or...

We were all happy to see approximately one foot of snow fall and stick in our neighborhood this week. My husband and I enjoyed looking at the beauty outside, while our children played in their winter wonderland. Unfortunately, I did not take very many photos.

We still have a lot of snow on the ground. As of Thursday, we also have a large branch, some small madrona branches and three trees down. One of the trees that fell was an old madrona, a favorite of mine. It came down on part of our fence.

Still, despite the cleanup and repairs that we have ahead of us, I am thankful for the beauty and enjoyment with which God provided us.

Dishwasher Repair - Watch the Video

About three years ago, we replaced our old broken dishwasher. When my husband purchased the new one, the store employee told him not to expect it to last more than two or three years, five years at the most. At the same time, a friend told me that she had gotten so tired of having to replace her dishwasher that she decided to invest in a Viking dishwasher. The sticker price of her dishwasher almost put me into shock.

A couple of weeks ago, our dishwasher stopped cleaning the dishes properly. We would place virtually clean dishes in the dishwasher and they would come out with a white etched film, or greasy, or just plain dirty looking. My husband tried a couple of things to fix it, but nothing worked.

On Monday, since he had the day off, he decided to find out how much it would cost to repair or replace the dishwasher. After doing a little research, he told me that a new Whirlpool or Kenmore would cost about $650, including delivery, installation, haul away, the power cord, and a hose. I told him that we couldn't afford it. In 2011, out of necessity, we replaced our old refrigerator, garage door opener, furnace and oven . In addition to this, we had thousands of dollars worth of medical/prescription bills. I decided to do a little research online to see if we could fix our dishwasher.

I stumbled upon Handy Guys Podcast and this podcast (embedded below) which seemed to address our problem. According to the handy guys, the basins of Kenmore, Kirkland Signature, and Whirlpool dishwashers usually need to be cleaned every two to three years.

After watching the video, my husband and I decided to try and fix our Kenmore dishwasher. Inside our dishwasher basin, we found a sippy cup straw, plastic wrap, popcorn kernels, a cake decorating tube lid, a metal ball, hair and caked on dishwasher detergent. Thanks to the handy guys, our dishwasher is cleaning the dishes again and we didn't need to spend a penny.

Brendan's Confirmation

On Wednesday, January 11, Brendan, his father and I went to his Confirmation evening of recollection. The evening began with a monastic type of potluck dinner, during which all of the participants remained silent while our pastor read to us about Maria (a holy young girl who lived in Mexico). After dinner, we preceded to the church where we spent an hour in Adoration. Adoration was followed by Benediction, Holy Mass and confirmation rehearsal. Confessions were heard during Adoration and Mass. The evening, combined with the confirmation classes taught by our pastor were a wonderful preparation for the sacrament of Confirmation.

On Thursday, January 12 (my father's baptism anniversary), the Sacrament of Confirmation was conferred on Brendan and 25 other young people at our parish by Archbishop Sartain. Brendan was very excited to receive this sacrament and, thanks in large part to these two books, knew long before he did so that he wanted Saint Anthony of Padua to be his patron saint. His siblings were overjoyed to see him confirmed. As I sat in the pew, praying for Brendan and watching the confirmandi, Patrick whispered to me that he could not see. I told him that he could stand in the side aisle and watch from there. A few minutes later, Finnian whispered the same to me, so I picked him up and stood in the side aisle with him. Both boys watched attentively as the confirmandi were confirmed. Eventually, they saw their big brother confirmed by the Archbishop. Having seen what they felt was important, Patrick and Finnian returned to our pew. Their knowledge of the importance of what was happening and their desire to truly see their brother receive this sacrament touched my heart.

I am happy that Brendan asked to be confirmed this year. I pray that he continues to grow in the Catholic faith and becomes a great saint.

Priestly Role Models

Sedes Sapientiae, ora pro nobis.

Our parish has been blessed with a second priest, Fr. Harkins. His presence has inspired my two youngest sons to pretend to be priests and "offer" Mass. They've been dressing up, cutting "hosts" from printer paper, ringing their little bell, and using their child-size thurible. The other day, Finnian came to me and said, "Mommy, I am Fr. Saguto and Patrick is Fr. Harkins." I smiled and thought to myself, "Imitation is truly the best form of flattery. I pray that if God calls you to be a priest, you answer His call and become a holy and faithful priest." We are very thankful that our boys have such great role models at our parish.

O Mary, Queen of the clergy, pray for us; obtain for us many holy priests.

Baby Update

At my doctor's appointment this morning, baby's heart rate was 145 beats per minute and my "baby belly" measured 23 centimeters which matches up nicely with the baby's age of 22 weeks and 4 days. I have another appointment in two weeks to check on the baby's growth and test my anti-factor Xa levels again. Thank you to everyone who has let me know that they are continuing to pray for the baby and for me. I can't wait to hold this little one in my arms.

Ten Rules for Being Happy Parents

Happy New Year!

I hope that everyone has a blessed Feast Day.

In 2012, I am going to attempt to live by the rules below which are adapted from Father Raoul Plus, S.J.’s Christ in the Home. I would also like to reread his book.

1. Always appear before your family in good humor. Nothing is so depressing as a father or mother out of sorts. See that the family never has to suffer because of your nervousness or irritability.

2. Never weary in cheering your family with your smile. It is not enough to avoid depressing them; you must brighten them up and let their spirits expand. Be especially vigilant when the little ones are around. Give them the alms of a smile, hard though it be at times. What a pity when children have to say, “I don’t like it at home.”

3. What can be shared, speak of it openly. If something must not be told, then don’t tell it. Do share what you can so everyone profits by your experience, especially the family.

4. Amiably show the greatest interest in the smallest things. Family problems are generally not affairs of state, but everything that concerns those we love most in this world should be worthy of interest: the baby’s first tooth, the honor ribbon won at school, the entrance of one of the little ones into the Holy Childhood Association.

5. Banish exaggerated asceticism from your life. If your home is Christian and each member of the family is learning to carry his cross, then it is essential to avoid making others suffer by a too ostentatious or inopportune austerity. There is abundant opportunity for self renunciation in devoting oneself to procuring joy for others. Marie Antoinette de Geuser used to sacrifice her great longing for recollection and her taste for a simple life by accompanying her brothers to evening affairs for which she wore dresses that she said “made her look vain.”

6. Be sure to treat all alike. Nothing is so disrupting to home life as favoritism for one or the other child. The same measure for all!

7. Never think of yourself, but always of them in a joyous spirit. Henry the Fourth of France used to crawl around on all fours, with his children on his back, to enliven the family get-together. Louis Racine, son of the famous French playwright, author of “Athalie,” relates, “My father was never so happy as when he was free to leave the royal court and spend a few days with us. Even in the presence of strangers, he dared to be a father; he belonged to all our games.”

8. Never begin an argument; always speak prudently. Discussion should not be banned unless it develops into bickering. A free habit of exchanging ideas on a broadening subject cannot but be profitable; the children should even be encouraged and led into it to develop in them a wise and discriminating mind and a habit of suspended judgment. Unsavory and disturbing subjects and those beyond their depth naturally ought to be avoided.

9. Always act patiently and answer graciously. That it takes the “patience of an angel” to rule vigilantly over the little world of the family is beyond question. Affability is essential.

10. By good will you will gain hearts and souls without exception. Loving much is the key to gain all. These slogans for a happy home life are not marvels of prose, but do express a precious rule of wise family discipline.

I enjoyed reading this book. It is full of beauty and love. At times, I found myself saying, "Oh, I/we do that." (Assign children to a day of the week; child checks mail, etc. on that day.) At other times, I thought, "What a great idea!" Although this book's title suggests that it is for large families, I think that home educators can benefit from it regardless of their family size. I haven't implemented all of Mrs. Brenneman's suggestions, but I have implemented some of them (folding laundry with my children for 15 minutes each day). I really appreciate Kim Brenneman's candid sharing. Yes, I do know that Mrs. Brenneman is writing from a Protestant perspective and recommends some Protestant catechisms in one of the chapters of her book. Alternatives to these recommendations include: reading the bible, using the Baltimore Catechism with your children, trying to assist at daily Mass, frequenting the Sacrament of Confession, studying history, and teaching your children history. "To be steeped in history is to cease to be Protestant." (Cardinal Newman) Kim has given mothers a wonderful gift with this book.

Tintin

On Tuesday, my five eldest children went to see The Adventures of Tintin with their dad and their uncle. I was happy to hear that they really liked it and that they are looking forward to hopefully seeing a sequel. Like their grandfather and me, they have grown up with the Tintin comic books and they enjoyed seeing him "brought to life" on a movie screen. I am looking forward to eventually watching the movie on blu-ray.

Christmas 2011

Once again this year, my husband gave us the greatest Christmas gift possible by taking us to Midnight Mass. As usual, Elizabeth and Finnian slept through the lessons and carols and the Mass. Patrick, however, surprised this year by staying awake. After Mass, he told me, "Mommy, I think that I am definitely ready to receive my First Communion. I actually stayed awake for the whole Mass!" I enjoyed being able to give my full attention to the Mass.

After Mass, we headed home and some of the children wondered whether or not St. Nicholas had visited. When we went into the house, they were not disappointed. I wish that I had had a video camera turned on to capture Elizabeth's amazement as she exclaimed to me, "Mommy, St. Nicholas came!"

The older children guided the younger ones over to our manger and we all sang "Happy Birthday" to Baby Jesus. (Bernadette did so privately later as she had to attend to Heidi.)

After they finished singing, the children started to open their presents. Each of them had their favorites.

Catherine was happy to receive a calligraphy kit.

Shortly after waking up on Christmas morning, Bernadette was heard playing music on the violin from the Lord of the Rings. She has continued to do so each day.

Brendan was very happy to receive tube balloons and an instructional booklet. He has been able to blow up tube balloons for a long time, but making figures out of them, like his great uncle does, has proven to be a little bit more challenging. His youngest sister and brother were delighted to be the recipients of dragon flies and parrots. I think that I am going to have to purchase this book for him soon.

Theresa likes the The Adventures Of Tintin Game for the Wii that her grandfather gave all of the children.

Patrick was delighted with the LEGO Kingdoms King's Castle that he and Finnian received from St. Nicholas. He also really likes the Nxt Generation crossbow that he received from his godparents.

Finnian was thrilled with his Buzz Bee shotgun that he received. He has been wanting one ever since Patrick received one for his birthday. I liked the fact that it was available for less than $10 at a couple of local stores. Both boys think that these shoot better than their Nerf guns.

Elizabeth has been spending hours playing with her Little People Nativity Scene (she received the Wisemen and their tents this year) and her Playmobil Castle.

All of the children are very excited about the Wii that their uncle gave them.

Once the presents were opened, we were all ready to head to bed to sleep for a little bit. Patrick and Finnian were up around seven, playing with their toys. The other children slowly meandered out of bed. My husband and I were surprised and thankful to receive breakfast in bed around 10. My feet hit the floor shortly after I finished breakfast.

At some point during the day, Catherine made pigs in a blanket, and some salamie and crackers were opened. While my husband and children played with the Wii, I prepared our Christmas dinner. Children occasionally wandered into the kitchen to help me, and to get a little something to eat and drink.

After eating our "Christmas feast" and praying our family Rosary, we went to bed happy and thankful for such a wonderful day.

I pray that everyone is enjoying the Christmas season.

Passing on the Blame

Why He Does What He Does

Yesterday, despite the fact that some of us are sick, we decided to head to the beach and finally take our Christmas photo. Prior to leaving the house, I told all of my swimmers that they were not to go in the water. Upon arriving at the beach, I reiterated my instructions.

As usual, Patrick's desire to wade through a rocky stream, outweighed his knowledge that he should listen to me. The first time that he decided to scale the rocks and water, he fell in waist deep, wetting his shoes and pants. Upon emerging from the water, he removed his socks and shoes. The second time, he fell in waist deep again. The third time, Patrick soaked himself from head to toes and I decided that it was time to head home.

As the children buckled themselves in their seats, I told my crying son, "Patrick, you know Catherine also wanted to walk through the stream, but she has learned that it is important to listen to me. I don't tell you not to do things in order to be mean. I tell you not to do them because I know what the consequences will be."

Without missing a beat, Patrick responded, "If I listened to you, our family would be boring."

My dear boy, you've always known how to keep life interesting. I love you!

Testing Vocabulary Patrick Style

Patrick: "Mommy, can you please help me clean my room tomorrow morning."

Me: "Yes."

Patrick: "Good because otherwise I might get 'roomatism'."

Me: "I don't think so."

Patrick: "What is rheumatism?"

Me: "I think its when you have sore bones."

Patrick: "Yes, if you don't help me clean my room, then I will have rheumatism from stepping on things that make my bones sore."

Finnian used and mispronounced a big word the other day. Patrick commented, "Finnian that's not how you say ___________. I think you need to check your pronunciation. Maybe, you need pronunciation lessons or something."

A couple of months ago, Patrick was teasing Finnian. As usual, Finnian responded by trying to attack Patrick. Patrick stopped Finnian in his tracks, saying, "Finnian stop! I am trying to come up with a diplomatic solution." It's too bad, Patrick didn't use the same line a few weeks later when Finnian gave him a black eye.

When It Rains

Yesterday, my older sister called. During our conversation, she commented, "I remember Mommy saying, 'When it rains, it pours.'" I couldn't help but respond, "I think it's pouring, but I have so much for which to be thankful."

Timely Advice

On Sunday, October 9, my pastor gave me some very timely advice in the confessional. He told me to share the advice with my husband which I obediently did, telling him, "Fr. Saguto told me that I should take some time for myself." Little did any of us know that my pastor's advice would be something about which I would have no say.

On the Friday preceding that Sunday, in the wee hours of the morning, I woke up with a pain in my right calf. Thinking that a cramp was starting, I flexed my foot to no avail. As Friday turned to Saturday, and Saturday turned to Sunday, the pain in my calf became increasingly worse. Listening to my husband, I called my doctor's office on Sunday morning. I told the on-call doctor what I was experiencing and she advised me to go to the ER to rule out a blood clot. As I got ready to do so, I decided that I would rather go to Sunday Mass; I also thought, "The pain is probably just muscle related." However, by Sunday evening, I realized that I should probably take the doctor's advice.

My husband lovingly took me to the ER. Once in the ER, the doctor checked my blood, administered blood thinner, and admitted me to the hospital. On Monday morning, a doppler ultrasound (?) was done on my leg and the hospital's obstetrician told me that I would be staying in the hospital for a week. My eyes welled up and I swallowed hard, asking, "A week?" The doctor replied, "Well, a minimum of three more days."

After the doctor left, I let the tears roll down my face, thinking, "I can't be away from my husband and children that long." Then, I started to pray the Rosary. As I did so, my pastor's advice came to mind, and I decided to turn my hospital stay into a little retreat. I continued to pray the Rosary, and added the Memorare and a special little prayer. The first time that my family visited, my eldest daughter brought my missal and two books for me to read. In doing so, she inadvertently added to my little retreat.

Fortunately, someone in the hospital overrode the obstetrician's decision and sent me home around bed time on Tuesday night. Thanks to my pastor's advice, I left feeling a little refreshed. After visiting my doctor the following Friday, I was thankful to see that this little baby inside me is doing well. I still have some ultrasound photos to share (10 weeks 2 days, and 11 weeks). I also now have something to offer up for this baby.

Melt My Heart

Out of necessity, my husband spent the last few days at home helping with the children. This morning, he returned to work. When Elizabeth woke up, she asked me, "Is Daddy home?" I replied, "No, sweetie, he went to work." Her response melted my heart, "But I need him."

9 Weeks

I intended to share the photo below last week, but we have been busy. Last week, my doctor did another ultrasound and I was amazed to see how much this baby had grown in one week. This little one was moving all over the place and the head, arms, and little legs were very obvious. When I arrived home and showed the children the picture, there was no need for me to point out the baby's head and arm. We are all very excited and praying for the youngest member of our family.

8 Weeks

On Wednesday, I went to my first doctor's appointment. At the recommendation of a friend and her doctor's office, I went to see a perinatologist. Seeing the perinatologist included having an ultrasound. This isn't the first ultrasound that I have had with a tiny little baby (I saw Theresa on ultrasound at 6 weeks); however, it is the first time that I was told so much. I heard this baby's heartbeating at 174 beats per minute and was told that the baby is 1.67 cm from head to bottom. I also saw the baby's little legs and arms when the doctor came in and ran the ultrasound again. The picture on the screen was clearer and easier to see than the photo below.

A Girl and Her Dog

A couple of weeks ago, as Elizabeth was petting Heidi, I heard her singing, "Oh doggy, there's something special between you and me." (adapted from Charlotte's Web)

Elizabeth is definitely correct. Although we are still trying to stop Heidi's biting (it is pretty bad at times), she tends to be very good with Elizabeth. Heidi is getting better about not jumping up on Elizabeth. She also still lets my little girl pull her tail without reacting (I am trying to stop Elizabeth from doing so). Elizabeth doesn't think twice about putting her food in the dog's mouth and, when told not to do so, pulling it right back out and putting it in her own mouth (ugh). She also likes sharing her water bottle with Heidi...I do mean sharing.

As a character in a movie that we watched recently said, "The outside of an animal is good for the inside of a child."

Heidi: Our Golden Retriever

On Friday, July 29, our lives changed when we purchased a lively, seven-week-old (born June 10) red Golden Retriever puppy named Heidi. There were some lighter puppies in the litter (the mom was red and the dad was light), but most of the children wanted "the red one". I think that red Golden Retrievers are beautiful.

Heidi is very good with the children, especially my youngest. I often find her watching and then trying to imitate what they are doing.

On Saturday, Heidi was watching Elizabeth walk up the stairs (something with which the dog was somewhat unfamiliar) and soon bounded up behind her, trying to get between Elizabeth's legs. On Monday, Heidi watched Finnian climb up the slide and she immediately tried to do the same. She ended up sliding down, but is still attempting to get up the slide. She also climbs in the kiddie pool with the younger children and splashes around with them.

Heidi rarely has an accident during the day, but night time is a different story. She likes to sleep on a sheet on the floor underneath Bernadette's bed and has never wet it, but she does wander off of the sheet and wet the carpet. She also likes to sleep in her crate. Unfortunately, she will wet in the crate before making any noise. Hopefully, she will be able to hold her bladder for more than 4 hours soon and/or she will start whining or barking before she has an accident in the crate.

The other issue that we are working on is also typical of a young puppy. Heidi is mouthing (or biting) us. We are obviously trying to stop this behavior and Elizabeth seems to have the most success at doing so. She holds a Nylabonewhen playing with Heidi and puts it in the dog's mouth whenever Heidi looks like she might bite.

On Monday night, I thoroughly enjoyed sitting on the couch and watching Elizabeth and Heidi (Finnian eventually joined them) playing sweetly on the floor together. I am amazed when I see Heidi calmly permitting Elizabeth to pet her from her head to the tip of her tail.

In addition to playing with Elizabeth, Heidi enjoys having her belly rubbed and often falls asleep as we rub it.

This is the first puppy (first dog) that we have owned which obviously means we need a little help in the puppy raising and training department. We are receiving this help from the Monks of New Skete's books, The Art of Raising a Puppy and How to Be Your Dog's Best Friend.I highly recommend these titles to prospective dog owners and owners who are having issues with their dogs. I think that we would be lost without these books. Of course, the employees at our local Petco have also been very helpful in responding to questions and I am sure that the Golden Retriever books that I have on hold at the library (per the Monks' recommendation) will also be of some assistance. I am also planning on taking Heidi to puppy training classes when she is around three months old.

We are thrilled to have a Golden Retriever!

Update: The day that I wrote this, Heidi started to whine in her crate in the middle of the night to let us know that she needed to "go potty". She usually runs to the door during the day when she needs to "go potty". So far, we have succeeded in crate training her. She also allows us to do all of the dominance exercises described by the Monks of New Skete. We are progressing with housebreaking, "come", "sit", "stay", "fetch", and leash training. We are still struggling with "NO BITE", despite consistency. In trying to find out when the puppy biting will stop, I discovered All About Goldens which is full of helpful information.

Olympic Game Farm

In addition to visiting the Dungeness Spit National Wildlife Refuge on Friday, we also thoroughly enjoyed going to the Olympic Game Farm in Sequim. The children were thrilled to see llamas, rabbits, peacocks, elk, zebras, horses, prairie dogs, yaks, a rhinoceros, bison, deer, tigers, lions, coyotes, wolves, and bears.

He's Still Got It

Growing up, my brother would occasionally walk on his hands. Even though he is over 40, he still does so sometimes. More importantly, he still has a strong faith. He and my sister-in-law are trying their best to pass on the Catholic Faith to their five children, assisting at Mass regularly and praying the Rosary as a family.

We have been happy to have my brother and sister-in-law visit, and I have appreciated seeing what wonderful parents they are to my nieces and nephews. The love in their family and the spiritual and physical care that they show for their children is inspirational.

One of my brother's favorite quotes is from St. Therese of Lisieux. She said, "I am not dying. I am entering into Eternal Life." My brother says, "I am living, so that I may hopefully enter into Eternal Life." I pray that he and his family may all one day enter into Eternal Life.

The Dungeness Spit

My brother, sister-in-law, and their five children are visiting us from Switzerland. Yesterday, we all had a great time at the Dungeness Spit National Wildlife Refuge. The drive out to Clallam County was beautiful.

I was in awe as I looked at the natural beauty of the Spit and couldn't help but marvel at how amazing God is.

Murphy's Law: Raccoon Style

We used to think that raccoons walking along ours and our neighbor's back fence were cute and try to take photos and video of them until last month.

We were surprised and pleased to find that starlings weren't nesting in our attic this spring.

A few weeks ago, our neighbors knocked on the door and told us that we had a raccoon walking on our roof. My husband chased it away.

We started hearing noises in the attic and I assumed that the birds had returned.

I noticed a wood shingle in our gutter on the chimney side of the house. My husband and son went up into the attic and found Mrs. Raccoon and three kits living up there. Our neighbor, who happens to work as a roofer, climbed up onto the roof and found that Mrs. Raccoon had ripped into our roof where the backside of the chimney meets the roof line.

We realized that starling eggs, and maybe birds, make tasty treats for the raccoons. Score one for the raccoons.

We called Darrin, a.k.a. the professional "raccoon man". Darrin came and set up traps.

One night, Mrs. Raccoon, or her kits, decided to start clawing its way into our living room through the ceiling. This got a little too personal for my husband and so he went up to take care of the raccoons. He succeeded in chasing them out of the attic.

The raccoon man came, looked in the attic and found that Mrs. Raccoon and her kits were no longer there. He gave instructions to have the roof repaired. The roof was repaired by our kind neighbor.

We contacted Mike, a homeschooling father, who happens to be a contractor/handyman and asked him if he could clean up the mess in our attic and properly repair the hole in our ceiling (my husband's temporary patch job was browning). He waited a week or two before coming to do the repairs in order to make sure Mrs. Raccoon was not going to return.

On Monday of this week, Mike came to our house and spent a large portion of his day cleaning up our attic and repairing our ceiling.

Yesterday, Thursday, as I was doing my daily gardening, I noticed a wood shingle on the ground and a roof shingle in the gutter. Brendan asked our neighbor, Rick, if he could take a look at our roof. He did so and found that Mrs. Raccoon had ripped into it again. I called my husband and said, "You're not going to believe this." Then, I called Darrin, the raccoon man, and left a message.

Last night, my husband heard Mrs. Raccoon making her noises above our kitchen.

Hopefully, the raccoon man succeeds in ridding our attic of this menace soon.

I can't believe that Mrs. Raccoon returned two days after the attic was cleaned up. I can't believe we used to think that raccoons walking along our back fence were cute.

When a Priest Makes a Sick Call

I wish that I had known. Our pastor paid a sick-call to our house yesterday to give Holy Commuion to Catherine. Before he came, he called and asked me if I had ever been present for a sick-call and I answered in the affirmative, letting him know that I had been present when my mom was sick and given Holy Communion by priests.

After hanging up the phone, I began to worry. I thought, I don't remember how the sick table should be set up. I wondered do I cover the whole table with a white cloth or is a small white cloth all that is needed? I don't think that I have a white cloth to cover the whole table. Do we need a standing Crucifix? I hope not because one of the boys accidentally broke ours. Even if I had remembered, the administration of Holy Communion for a sick-call is different in the Tridentine Rite than in the Novus Ordo.

After Father left, Catherine made me aware of an old prayer book that we own. At the same time, she also brought my attention to several other old Catholic books that once belonged to my husband’s grandparents and other relatives. If I had known about a well-worn and well-used book, Catholic Practice at Church and at Home: The Parishioners Little Rule Book*, I would not have needed to worry.

So what does this book say about preparing the sick-room and sick-call visits?

III. Preparation of the Sick-Room.

"An important person is coming; prepare as for a human of importance." (penciled in note by John P. Bagan)

Have the sick-room in good order by the time the Priest arrives, perfectly clean and tidy. Have all unsightly objects removed, such as soiled linens, dishes and vessels used by the sick person. Let the articles that must remain, be perfectly clean and presentable.

Have clean linens and coverings put on the bed.

Have no dog, cat or other animal in the room or in the parts leading to it.

Have a small table with a clean white cover opposite the sick-bed or at some distance from it, so that it can be seen by the sick-person. (emphasis mine)

Do not place it right next to the bed at the head of it, if it can be avoided.

Have a chair immediately next to the bed at the sick person's head for the Priest, so that he may look toward the foot of the bed and not into the sick person's face when he hears the confession.

IV. Articles for the Sick-Room

1. A small table or stand, at least two feet at the top, with a clean white cover.

2. One Crucifix standing on the table or hanging directly over it for handing to the sick person to be kissed. Do not have the holy-water font attached to it. (I need to buy another standing Crucifix.)

3. Two pure wax candles, or one at least least, in suitable candlesticks.

4. One small vase or glass of holy water (not Easter water) with a small sprig or brush for sprinkling. (Father brought holy water with him.)

5. One small glass of fresh drinking water and spoon.

6. One clean white cloth, napkin or small towel, as a Communion cloth… Have nothing else but the above mentioned articles on the sick-room table...

V. Administration of the Sacraments

The following rules suppose the bringing of Holy Communion to the sick person.

As soon as the Priest arrives at the house, let someone meet him at the door with a lighted candle, and having bent the knee before the Blessed Sacrament which he carries, lead him to the sick-room.

Let none bid him the time of day or begin to speak to him, unless what is strictly necessary, and that in a low tone of voice.

Let all others drop on their knees as siib as they meet the Priest, in whatever place they may be, and then follow him to the sick-room.

All should remain kneeling in the sick-room or in the place adjoining it, as space will permit, whilst the Priest pronounces the blessing and sprinkles the room, and not retire until bidden by him, when he is about to hear the confession.

Do not run away when the Priest comes; but let all endeavor to be present when he administers the rites of religion. Arrange your dress and put on a respectable appearance. Let no one be present in his shirt-sleeves, or with bare arms and the like.

When the Priest has heard the confession of the sick person and gives the signal, all should re-enter the room and remain kneeling in devout prayer until the Priest has finished his ministrations.

If at any time before the Priest administers Holy Communion, it is necessary to pass before the sick-room table, the knee must be bent before it as in passing before the altar in church.
If anyone is familiar with the Latin prayers, he should answer to them.

Somebody should be ready to assist the Priest, especially during the anointing, to see that the ears, hands and feet of the sick person are uncovered and properly presented for the unctions.

Whatever articles of devotion may be required for the sick-room, have the Priest bless them before he retires, such as an indulgenced crucifix for the sick person to hold, a pair of beads, the scapulars and the like.

The book goes on to say that those things with which the Priest has purified his fingers, must be thrown into the fire.

*The book has been republished (I don't know if it is a scan and reprint, or an actual republishing) and is available here. It is also available via Google Books here. It would be nice to see the book updated (if need be) and republished. I have a lot to learn.

Planting Seeds

Several weeks ago, as I sat in the dentist office reading a book, I heard a lady say, "I thought he was old school." I looked up and she looked at me and repeated, "I thought he was old school." I responded, "Actually what he has written is just as pertinent today as it was when he wrote it." She stood up and walked over to me saying, "Really? I used to watch him on TV in the '50s. I didn't even know he wrote books."

"Yes, really." was my reply and I went on to share with her a little bit about the book. I also mentioned another book that he had written and the fact that our library system carries several of his works. Eventually, the woman wandered back to her chair, saying that she would have to see if the library carried any of his works as audio books.

As she finished talking, her husband began. He began by criticizing his wife for always wanting to use technology instead of actually reading. I responded to his criticisms with the last words that I had read before his wife engaged me in conversation, "There goes Philip Neri, except for the grace of God." Thus, our conversation began.

Eventually, my children meandered into the waiting room and I was called to the counter to pay. As I was leaving, I said goodbye to the Christian couple. The man responded, "God bless you! I hope to find some of his books at the library." As I climbed into the car, I could not help but think, "You never know when God might plant and water a seed."

The Lord's Day or CYO's Day

When our children were three and under, we met a good Catholic family whose boys enjoyed playing sports, especially soccer and tennis. The boys' parents, Anne and Paul, made sure they were able to do so, signing them up to play on soccer teams and taking them to one of the local tennis courts to hit the ball with them. Anne would occasionally talk to me about her boys' teams and/or their games. One fall, as we were talking, she told me that she did not know whether or not her boys would be playing soccer in the same league because some of the games were scheduled on Sundays. She told me that she had told the coach and others in charge that her boys would not be able to play on the team if the game days weren't changed. Anne knew that it is not a sin to play sports on Sundays, but she also knew that God and Mass were priorities for her family and she did not want to have sports competing with their faith. I am thankful for her example.

Receiving a Trophy from Coach John (Boys & Girls Club)

When some of our children expressed a desire to play sports, we looked at CYO Athletics. However, when we learned that CYO often schedules its games on Sundays in our Archdiocese, we had to stop and ask ourselves: "What would we be teaching our children if we were constantly changing when we went to Mass in order to accommodate a game? Would our children possibly learn that sports take priority over going to Mass?" We realized that our children could not participate in CYO sports for one simple reason: We will not juggle our Mass schedule in order to let our children play on CYO teams. Sundays are the Lord's Day, not CYO's Day.

Choristers Picnic

This year, my four oldest children enjoyed participating in our parish's choir classes which are taught by a very talented nun.

Since today was the last day of choir class, some of us headed to the park after choir and Mass to thank Sister.

The children enjoyed playing on the zip line with their friends and throwing the softball with their teacher.

They also liked playing on the merry go round.

My children are looking forward to singing with the parish choir on Pentecost Sunday and continuing to participate in choir during the summer. I am thrilled that they have such a wonderful teacher and that they are being given this opportunity.

On Saturday, May 14, Bernadette participated in her second violin recital. She played the Ashokan Farewell by Jay Ungar. This is the first year that she is playing the violin and she is thoroughly enjoying it.

On more than one occasion, my eldest daughter has lamented the fact that I record her and her sister during their recitals, rather than when they are practicing and relaxed. She claims (correctly) that they play better when they are not performing.

Yesterday, Fr. Berg, the Superior General of the Priestly Fraternity of St. Peter, visited our parish and offered Mass for Good Shepherd Sunday. Before beginning his sermon, he wished all of the mothers a happy Mother's Day, quoting a little bit from Pope Pius XII. This morning my curiosity got the best of me and I did a Google search for Pope Pius XII and mother. The first document that popped up was Pope Pius XII Speaks to Mothers: Allocution of Pope Pius XII 'DAVANTI A QUESTA' translated by Canon G.D. Smith. I have printed Ven. Pope Pius XII's allocution and am looking forward to reading it when I have a little time on my hands.

The sun is coming up.

I am thinking about
and praying for a friend whose husband is in Afghanistan for a year. She has three young boys and a newborn baby girl.

I am thankful for

the Triduum Masses at our parish. Words cannot describe the beauty of these Masses. A priest and a seminarian from the Priestly Fraternity of St. Peter assisted our pastor in offering the Solemn High Masses.

A friend from the pro-life community, who was at the Mass on Holy Thursday, called me a few of days ago and asked, "Why did they ever change it?" She went on to say that it was one of the most amazing Masses and that she was struck by the focus on Christ and the Eucharist. She is planning on coming to all of the Triduum Masses next year. I think she understands why my family and I became parishioners at this FSSP parish over two years ago. I also think that she would do the same if the parish wasn't over an hour away from her.

This same woman also shared, "After going to the Mass of Our Lord's Last Supper, the use of Latin makes a lot more sense. On Good Friday, the church where I went read the readings in English, Spanish and Vietnamese, making the liturgy a lot longer than it should have been." I shared that the Stations of the Cross and liturgy at our parish had taken about four hours, but the time flew by very quickly.

I wish
that we lived closer to our parish. I know that I said something similar last week, but that longing is still there. I really want to be able to go to Mass at our parish daily, not just twice a week.

From the kitchen,

A few plans for the rest of the week

We will be going to Mass. I am hoping to visit a local garden center and nursery. I want to spend some time gardening, pulling weeds and planting plants this weekend. We might walk to the library and pick up some books that we have on hold. I have towels and bedding to wash (not to mention clothes). This Saturday, as I iron and do laundry, I am looking forward to listening to some lectures/talks on virtues that were given by our pastor.

I need

to possibly buy a new rose bush to replace one that may have died (I have never had a rose die before). It looked fine last summer and I am perplexed as to why it has no real growth, yet. Thanks to my parents (they had some beautiful roses in their garden), I know that a rose should not be planted in the same location as a previously planted rose; however, I need a rose in the same location, so I will be following this advice, "Never plant a rose where another has been growing – if you must use that spot – then dig out the soil and replace with soil from another part of the garden."

A Year With the Saints. This is actually my second year with the saints. The book focuses on one virtue each month, quoting saints (see quote above) and sharing a little bit about saints and holy people who exemplified the given virtue. The virtue for April is patience.

I am hoping for

beautiful weather the rest of this week and that my youngest children will behave (no whispering) during the Triduum Masses and liturgies.

Some of my favorite things
are the Masses and liturgies of the Triduum. I am happy to hear my children counting the days until Holy Thursday, Good Friday, and the Easter vigil.

We are planting:

Zucchini again. A crow removed all of the leaves from our zucchini plant. A friend told me that broken egg shells can act as a deterrent to slugs; I am hoping that they might do the same for the crow. So far, "Mr. Crow" has removed the largest leaf of our second plant and has started moving the little pieces of egg shell one at a time. Our next line of defense is a broom stick handle with plastic bags attached to it, standing next to the zucchini.

A few plans for the rest of the week

We are going to go to the Triduum Masses and liturgies. As I told the children, going to Mass each day is a small gift that we can give to Jesus who gave us His life, who died on the cross for us and rose from the dead on Easter Sunday. We are also going to continue working on pysanky, make Easter cards, and clean the house.

I am hearing

Bernadette practicing her violin. She is practicing the Ashokan Farewell for her May recital. Usually, I fold laundry while she is playing. It is so relaxing and peaceful to simply sit and listen to her play. As I type, Catherine has joined her and they are practicing a piano/violin duet of Edelweiss that Catherine's piano teacher wrote for them. They will most likely play the duet at Catherine's piano recital in May.

I am thinking about this prayer that I read:

My suffering and crucified King, can I expect an easy life when You lived such a hard one? No. I want to be like You as far as I am able in this earthly life of mine. Let me choose to work, pray, and suffer as much like You as possible. The greatest privilege I can obtain is that of living a life like Yours. You chose and bore every suffering and hardship for My sake. Let me choose to work and suffer for Your sake. I hope to meditate often upon the sufferings which You embraced for me. As I do so, help me grow in the desire to suffer more for You in my daily life. Amen.

My Daily Bread

I am thankful for my husband and children.

I am wearing my pajamas and am almost ready to get up and start my day.

I am reading Life of Christ by Fulton J. Sheen. My paternal grandmother introduced me to this wonderful book. It is the last book that she ever read. This is the second or third time that I have read the book. I actually started reading it during Advent, but am thankful that I am finishing it during Passiontide. It is a book that every Christian should read.

I am hoping for a special prayer request to be answered, but am open to God's will (whatever it might be).

One of my favorite things is gardening, but our yard still needs a lot of work and I still have a lot to learn when it comes to growing vegetables and improving our garden. Thankfully, there is this gardening calendar that helps me know when to do things.

We are planting: Since February, we have been busy planting flower and vegetable seeds. We have started planting some of the seedlings outside and are slowly working on trying to beautify our garden. Hopefully, more of our flowers will be blooming by Easter.

A few plans for the rest of the week: I am going to continue to teach and learn with my children. We also want to spend some time outside, planting seedlings and pulling weeds.

I am hearing the excitement in Theresa's voice as she exclaims, "Patrick, you have eight ladybugs now!" In addition to learning about the lifecycle of the butterfly, the children have also been raising ladybugs. Insect Lore sent 9 ladybug larvae and the children have been enjoying observing their lifecycle. None of us had any idea that ladybug larvae are so ugly!

Around the house, the voices of my children are making me aware of the fact that I need to put my feet on the ground and start working with them.

Pysanky Tip

"I've been making Pysanky since I was 12 -- it can be a very spiritual tradition, gathering around the candle and thinking of the symbols and colors and their meanings. If you melt the wax with a candle flame, the flame has to be very tall: 1 1/2" or more. The egg passes through the side of the flame, not the top, to avoid getting soot on your egg. Have a blessed time this Lent!"

Irene left the above comment here. Her timing was perfect, as we will be making pysanky once again this year. Last year, we ended up putting most of our eggs in the oven because we always got soot on the egg when using the flame. This year, thanks to Irene's tip, we will try melting the wax with the flame again.

The Family Rosary

Catherine includes you in her "Dear Little Jesus" prayers each night (with my help). She is praying the Rosary with us now. Some words are said before, some with, and some after us...

(Taken from an email sent to my brother when our oldest child was 26 months)

Growing up, one of the greatest gifts that my parents gave to my siblings and me was praying the Rosary with us each night and at the beginning of every car trip that exceeded 20 minutes. My husband and I are trying to give the same gift to our children.

Around 7:00 p.m., every evening, we kneel down in our living room and pray the rosary as a family. Each night, a different family member starts the rosary, including the Apostles Creed, the Our Father, three Hail Marys (said for an increase in the virtues of faith, hope, and charity), the Glory Be, and the first decade. Since there are more people in our family than there are decades of the individual mysteries of the rosary, we have devised an unwritten rotating schedule, based on age, to insure that everyone gets an opportunity to begin and/or lead a decade of the rosary each week. For example:

Day 1: Daddy, Mommy, Child 1, Child 2, Child 3
Day 2: Mommy, Child 1, Child 2, Child 3, Child 4
Day 3: Child 1, Child 2, Child 3, Child 4, Child 5
Day 4: Child 2, Child 3, Child 4, Child 5, Child 6
Day 5: Child 3, Child 4, Child 5, Child 6, Daddy
Day 6: Child 4, Child 5, Child 6, Daddy, Mommy
Day 7: Child 5, Child 6, Daddy, Mommy, Child 1

We finish the Rosary with the traditional prayers and then the children say their personal "Dear Jesus" prayers.

On those rare nights, when we start getting into bed without kneeling down to pray (due to guests or a late activity), one of the children will inevitably say, "But Mommy (or Daddy), we haven't prayed the Rosary."

I hope that my children will always pray the Rosary each day, and if they are called to married life that they will pass this gift on to their children.

Easter Butterflies

Once again this Lent, we ordered caterpillars from Insect Lore for our butterfly garden. Last week, four of the caterpillars started making their chrysalis. We have moved the four chrysalides (or pupae) to the butterfly garden and are still waiting for the last (and smallest) caterpillar to make its chrysalis. Four butterflies should emerge a little before Easter. The last butterfly will hopefully make its appearance on or after Easter.

As Patrick and Finnian were playing on Friday, we heard Finnian tell Patrick:

Last night, as I ironed, Finnian sat on a chair and chatted away and occasionally asked a question.

Finnian: "Mommy, when we die are we completely dead?"

Me: "No, our souls go to Heaven if we've been good."

I really like how my little boy thinks and expresses himself. All of the dots aren't always connected in what he says, but I know that they are in his mind.

Kissing it Better

A couple of nights ago, when Elizabeth asked me to read to her, I responded, "Sweetie, Mommy can't read to you because she has a very bad headache." Elizabeth replied, "Mommy, I kiss it better." She proceeded to kiss my forehead in several places and then said, "It better." A few minutes later, she requested, once again, that I read to her. When I told her that my head hurt too much to read, she stated, "I kissed it better." I answered, "I know, but it still hurts." She said, "I kiss it better." She immediately started kissing my forehead. Upon stopping, she handed me a book and said, "Now read it."

Chicken Pox Tips

I have had several friends ask me for tips regarding the chicken pox, so I thought that I would share them here while two of my children are still recovering and ideas are fresh in my mind.

Look at the chicken pox as an opportunity to spend time with your child, reading a lot of stories and playing various board games. Chess was popular in our house. Brendan taught me how to play. I was surprised to learn that Finnian and Patrick already knew all the pieces and the moves that they can make. Patrick is quite good at the game. Finnian occasionally views it as a game of war and makes me smile with his exclamations.

Stock up on popsicles, ice cream, and juice. The popsicles and juice were used to share chicken pox germs with friends who visited and because they were something special for the sick children (we don't usually eat popsicles in winter, and ice cream and juice are rare treats). One family brought a candycane to our house to help spread the chicken pox germs.

Tylenol (acetaminophen) might be needed for the fever. We also gave it to some of our children when they felt particularly uncomfortable. We buy the Kirkland Signature brand acetaminophen for children from Costco because of the cost. Costco charges $4.59 for two decent size bottles.

My four older children enjoyed taking lukewarm baths with Aveeno added to it. (Since purchasing the Aveeno, I learned that it is produced by Johnson & Johnson. This company contributes money to Planned Parenthood and manufactures birth control. For this reason, I usually don't buy their products.) My two youngest enjoyed lukewarm baths with nothing added to the bath.

Most of my children felt more comfortable wearing their father's or big brother's undershirts turned inside out. My youngest didn't wear a shirt. My youngest son found that boxers with the cotton covering the elastic waistband were a lot more comfortable than underwear.

We applied bacitracin antibiotic ointment to chicken pox that were particularly bothersome with great results. I tried calamine lotion initially, but the children did not like it. The bacitracin even worked to heel a picked pox that looked like it was getting infected.

One of my boys held ice packs on chicken pox that were particularly uncomfortable and said that it felt really good.

We encouraged our children to offer their suffering for others. One of my daughters did this exceptionally well. Despite being completely covered with chicken pox, she never complained once. When I asked her if she was offering up any discomfort, she humbly said, "Yes."

When friends left our house, we tried to remember to tell them, "May the pox be upon your house!"

Reaping the Benefits of Chicken Pox

Finnian came downstairs this morning, climbed on my lap, gave me a kiss, and said, "I have something that is a little red on me. I think it's chicken pox." He showed me his red blistery spot and I confirmed that he has chicken pox. He was very excited and proceeded to ask, "Can I have a popsicle? Can I watch a movie? Can you take me a bath? Can I have ice cream?"*

I told him that he could eat a popsicle after breakfast. When he finished his popsicle, he once again asked, "Can I watch a movie?" I responded that he could do so after his sisters practiced piano and violin. He responded, "Take me a bath." I told him that I would give him a bath tonight.

I have never seen a child so excited about being sick. Hopefully, his excitement continues to outweigh his discomfort.

*No matter how many times we tell him, he never says, "give me a bath."

Chicken Pox

My four chicken pox-ridden children have recovered and tell me that it wasn't too bad. They enjoyed playing board games, listening to stories, watching movies, and playing with some friends who visited.

My youngest has had chicken pox since Wednesday evening and is requesting some of the same benefits that her older sisters and brothers had, popsicles and ice cream.

I am wondering when Finnian will have some real spots. I say real spots because one day, he pointed to a mole and said, "Mommy, look. I have chicken pox." I explained that it was his birthmark mole. Later, he pointed to a freckle and told me, "Mommy, I have chicken pox. See." I looked and shared that it was a freckle. During dinner that night, Finnian said, "Daddy, I have a lot of prickles. Mommy told me."* Hopefully, he reacts as well to chicken pox.

*Finnian has two freckles at most.

Guess Who? Saints Edition

Last night, I was thrilled to find a new version of Guess Who on Jessica's blog. She had seen Guess Who...of the Saints on Arma Dei: Equipping Catholic Families. Today, I made our own template of saints (pdf), including the large pieces (pdf), and then my son cut them out, etc.

What I really like about Guess Who? Saints Edition is that it appeals to older children, too. Instead of simply asking questions about what the character looks like, the children (ages 6 and up) are asking questions about the saints. During one game, I heard:

"Was the saint a male or female?"
"Female"
"Was the saint a martyr?"
"No"
"Was the saint from France?"
"No"
"Was the saint from Hungary?"
"Yes"
"Oh, it's St. Elizabeth of Hungary!"

I am expecting that the questions might become more complex over time.

The Apparition of the Blessed Virgin Mary at Lourdes

From February 11 to July 16, 1858, the Blessed Virgin came down eighteen times from heaven (Introit), and showed herself to St. Bernadette Soubirous (Collect), in the cave of the rock at Massabielle (Gradual). On March 25, she said to the little shepherdess of 14 years of age: "I am the Immaculate Conception"2. Today's feast therefore recalls Mary's triumph over the serpent (Tract) which the septuagesimal liturgy has in mind.
Like the woman seen by St. John "clothed in the sun, with the moon under her feet and a crown of twelve stars over her head" (Epistle), the Virgin of Lourdes "is clothed in a robe and veil as white as snow, she wears a blue girdle and on her bare feet rests a golden rose3 all symbolic of her virginal love. Read-Aloud Books for 5-Year-Old Children

I was happy to receive a question about read-aloud books for 5-year-old children. My first inclination was to recommend chapter books, but thankfully I took some time to think. I thought about the chapter books that I read to my two oldest daughters, starting around age five and six. Although the girls enjoyed listening to the stories, they remember none of them. They do remember the picture books that I read to them. I thought about the books that my husband reads to our children at night. Our older children like listening to them. Sometimes, the younger children like to stay and listen, too, but other times, I sneak away with my little ones and read them picture books.

What stories have my five-year-old children enjoyed hearing?

In addition to reading picture books to my younger children at night, I also try to read to them each morning. When I do so, I have noticed that my older children will invariably stop what they are doing and listen to th story. Some of them will even come and stand or sit close to me, so that they can see the pictures. While I definitely think that chapter books should be read aloud and I appreciate listening to my husband read them to our children, I am enjoying reading picture books with my younger (and older) children. I know that there will be plenty of time to read books like these to my little ones. Picture books tend to lend themselves to cuddling up and reading together, fostering an early enjoyment of reading that will most likely continue as the children grow.

Apple Trees and Chicken Pox

On Saturday, Brendan planted an apple tree with a little help from his dad. On Sunday morning, Finnian asked, "Mommy, does our apple tree have any apples, yet?" This morning, Finnian asked, "Mommy, does our apple tree have any apples, yet?" I have explained to him that our apple tree probably won't produce apples this year, but he remembers last year's tomatoes and he is anxious to see the apples grow.

On another note, four of my children have chicken pox. Hopefully, my two youngest will get them at the same time, too.

Remembering

Last year, on this date, my family and I were looking forward to going to Mass for the Feast of Candlemas. However, as the afternoon wore on, I started to experience some complications with my pregnancy and I knew that it would be prudent to stay home. I had experienced similar problems when I was pregnant with Elizabeth, but this time, they seemed more intense. Thus, I asked family and friends to pray and I made a doctor's appointment for the next day.

The doctor's appointment went well and my ob felt that there was no real reason for concern. He had me schedule a follow-up appointment and sent me to the lab to have my hcg levels checked. On the morning of the 4th, I received a phone call from the nurse, letting me know that my hcg levels were over 23,000 and everything looked great, but everything wasn't great. After dinner that night, I started to hemorrhage and I continued to do so for the next 11 1/2 hours. When I felt completely weak and like I was going to either faint or die, I prayed, "Dear God, please have mercy on me. I want to be here for my husband and children, and I don't want to die without going to confession or receiving last rites." Then I called for my husband to come and help me. Everything slowed down. He came in and helped me into our room and bed. Thankfully, I was able to stay there for almost 30 minutes.

On the 5th, after experiencing such a horrendous night, I thought that my miscarriage was complete, but I soon learned that it was not. My pregnancy came to a final end on the 7th of February. Since that time, I have prayed regularly for another baby and I have offered my cross for a pregnant mother in our parish who, after 11 miscarriages, delivered her second son on the 29th of January. Since February 2010, I have tried (sometimes very ungraciously) to be able to accept God's will. I have tried to focus on the many blessings in my life and I have found some peace.

Tonight, for the feast of Candlemas, I will go to Mass and I will pray for all mother's who have lost a child or children in miscarriage or after birth. I will pray once more for acceptance of God's will and I will thank Our Blessed Mother for her example. Tonight, I will pray for my children and I will hold each one them a little bit closer, thanking God for blessing me with them.

Washington State March for Life Photos

On January 18, we participated in the March for Life in Olympia. We were all very impressed with Archbishop Sartain (Seattle's new Archbishop) and the number of people who were present to witness to the sanctity of human life. The local Catholic radio station reported that there were approximately 9000 participants.

The children were thrilled to meet Archbishop Sartain (and so were we). He took the time to ask each of the children their names and shook Patrick's hand for a few minutes, or rather Patrick shook the Archbishop's hand for a few minutes.

Who Will Protect Her?

A few nights ago, Catherine brought Elizabeth into my bedroom, saying, "Elizabeth is scared." I took her in my arms and the following conversation took place:

Me: "You don't need to be scared. Mommy will protect you."

Elizabeth: "No!"

Me: "Daddy's here. He can protect you, too."

Elizabeth (a little louder): "No! Jesus protect me."

New Year's Dinner

Traditionally, our New Year's dinner consists of spiral-sliced ham, scalloped potatoes, vegetables, salad, Martinelli's Sparkling Apple Juice, and eggnog. On December 31, my husband went to the store and purchased the necessary items for our meal. However, in our family, the birthday child decides the menu for his special day. Therefore, on New Year's Day, my husband asked our youngest son, "What do you want for dinner?" Our little boy responded, "Chinese food." Our son might have started a new tradition. We will see what he wants for his birthday dinner next year.

This is the second or third time that I have read this book. It is excellent!

The Song at the Scaffold: A Novel of Horror and Holiness in the Reign of Terror by Gertrud Von Le Fort

I will most likely reread this book. One of the many things that struck me was the fact that during (or immediately prior to) the French Revolution, the government forced the nuns to dress in lay clothing. I could not help, but reflect on the fact that today, some nuns actually choose to not wear a habit.

Our Lady's Knights

Our youngest sons were delighted to receive these costumes for Christmas (the paper crowns were not included). Finnian has stated more than once, "I am a Knight of Glory." I call them "Our Lady's Knights". Both boys have only taken off their costumes to go to Mass, eat, and sleep. I enjoy seeing them dressed up and listening to their chivalric discussions.

Christmas Piano Recital

On Saturday, I took my five youngest children to Catherine's Christmas piano recital. Elizabeth sat on my lap (slightly shaky video) quietly listening to all of the students. Catherine and her piano teacher's daughter played a duet of Ding Dong Merrily on High and then Catherine played Sonatina in C Major by William Duncombe. She was satisfied with the duet, but disappointed with how she played the sonatina. The children and I simply enjoyed listening to her play.
