We're Missing Him

and I think that he is missing us, too. Yesterday, when I spoke to Brendan, he asked, "What are you doing at home?" "Does Elizabeth have more teeth?" "Is she saying any new words?"

I also learned that it was Brendan and my sister who suggested that my brother-in-law take Theresa (Brendan's best friend) and his daughter, who is the same age as Theresa, crabbing this weekend. Brendan thinks that Theresa will "have the time of her life" with her uncle and cousin.

Butterfly Sandwiches

Recently, I purchased a butterfly-shaped sandwich cutter to creatively cut the crust off of my youngest son's sandwiches. I was excited to use it for the first time today and happily told him that I was making him a butterfly sandwich. As I placed Finnian's sandwich in front of him, he started to cry. I asked him, "What's wrong?" He replied, "This isn't a butterfly sandwich." I said, "Yes, it is. See here are the wings." He responded, "No, it's not. It don't fly."

These were a Few of My Favorite Things

As I start to think about next year (yes, I did say start and yes, I know it is July), I realized that some books, etc. really helped us this year. Some of the things that enhanced our school year were:

Child's Treasury of Daily Prayers ~ If my memory serves me correctly, I bought this book in the spring. After receiving it, we began each morning by saying the prayers for the month and the day of the week. This comb-bound book also inspired us to start reading about the saint of the day again. If we said our morning prayers, I counted our day as a success. We are continuing to say the prayers for the days of the week throughout the summer. The children really like starting their day this way (so do I).

Exploring Creation with Zoology 2: Swimming Creatures of the Fifth Day ~ Catherine used this book this year and thoroughly enjoyed it. She learned a lot about sea life, improved her drawing skills, kept a notebook, made plenty of sculpey sea creatures for a model aquarium, and raised tadpoles and sea monkeys.

Saxon Math and the corresponding D.I.V.E CD ~ This was the second year that Catherine used Saxon and the D.I.V.E CD for math. Once again, she really liked it. This program in combination with the CD has made a huge difference in her thoughts on math...she actually likes it!

First Communion Preparation found in CHC's Second Grade Lesson Plans ~ As I have said before, I wish that I had used these with my other children (I bought the plans several years ago, but never used them).

Tour a Country found in CHC's Third Grade Lesson Plans ~ Brendan really enjoyed learning about various countries and making the travel brochures.

Music Masters CDs ~ I finally purchased these CDs thanks to the fact that Adoremus has been selling them for an excellent price, $59 for all 18 CDs. We have been enjoying listening to them.

They're in Rodrigues

I spoke to Brendan, my dad, and my sister this morning. They arrived safely in Rodrigues. Brendan was very happy to see my dad. They have always had a special bond. After arriving, he helped take my dad's dog, Dot Com, for a walk. He also herded some goats and fed the chickens. I won't be surprised if Brendan tells us that he wants to stay with my dad longer than three weeks, or suggests that we move there.

My sister told me that while they were traveling, Brendan had only slept for three hours. She pointed out that during that time, I had slept for two nights. After speaking with me, he was going to take a shower and go to bed. My sister sent a text message a couple of hours later and let me know that he was sleeping soundly.

The Travelers are in London

Well, the travelers (my older sister and my eldest son) left last night. We are all missing my son's smiling face.

My sister and Brendan called a few minutes ago to say that they had arrived safely in London and were waiting for their connecting flight at Heathrow. My sister shared that Brendan is very excited, wired, and has not stopped moving (he's always had a hard time staying still). She also told me that his bug vacuum was confiscated, as it looked too much like a gun. Oops, I guess we should have packed it in his suitcase. We will hopefully hear from them tonight (tomorrow morning for them) before they take a little plane to see my dad.

Cross-posted here. Brendan asked me to record his visit to my dad there.

June Piano Recital

Summer Day

by Jean Baptiste Duvernoy

Sonatina in C Major
Op. 792, No. 8

by Carl Czerny

My daughters' piano teacher is retiring. I know that the girls will miss having her as their teacher (so will I). She has a gift for working with children and knowing how to motivate them.

This Is For My Husband

Growing Up Too Quickly

This little girl enjoys playing under the dining room table. She started pulling herself to a stand before she started crawling. She crawled on her hands and knees, for the first time, in the vestibule of our church, on June 19, the Feast of the Sacred Heart and the beginning of the Year of the Priesthood. This little girl also likes to crawl up the stairs. Thankfully, there are a lot of eyes to watch her do so and at least one person who will always go up the stairs behind her.

Travel Prayers

Please say a prayer for my eldest son (who is still very young) and my eldest sister. They will be leaving in a couple of days to visit my dad for three weeks.
My sister has a "heart of gold" and is always willing to help others. She and my son are the only two going and she has promised to take extra good care of him and my dad. She will be celebrating her wedding anniversary and her birthday while she is away, without her husband and three daughters.
Please pray that they arrive and return safely.

Remember, O Christian soul...

The prayer below used to appear on the back of our parish's bulletin.

Remember, O Christian soul,
That thou hast this day
and every day of thy life...

God to glorify,
Jesus to imitate,
A soul to save,
A body to mortify,
Sins to repent of,
Virtues to acquire,
Hell to avoid,
Heaven to gain,
Eternity to prepare for,
Time to profit by,
Neighbors to edify,
The world to despise,
Devils to combat,
Passions to subdue,
Death perhaps to suffer,
Judgement to undergo.

Therefore, O child of Jesus and Mary,
Avoid sin and all its occasions.
Pray often,

go frequently to Confession
and Holy Communion.
